On all vehicles, it's the differential placed between the wheel axles that allows this difference in speed, while retaining the full driving force at the wheels. But with a conventional differential, as soon as one wheel loses grip, it spins in a vacuum, while the other comes to a standstill. Everyone, especially off-roaders, has experienced this problem.

The ARB locker replaces the original differential with an internally-locking differential, activated at will by a button on the dashboard. Once the differential is locked, only one wheel with grip is needed to get the vehicle moving again. When deactivated on the road, the lock does not affect the vehicle's reactions, unlike other locking systems which are permanently active.
