When a vehicle takes a bend, the outside wheel covers a greater distance than the inside wheel, so it has to turn faster.

On all vehicles, it's the differential between the axle halves that makes this difference in speed possible, while retaining the full driving force at the wheels. But with a conventional differential, as soon as one wheel loses grip, it spins in a vacuum, while the other comes to a standstill. Everyone, especially off-roaders, has experienced this problem.

Once the differential is locked, only one wheel with grip is needed to get the vehicle moving again. When deactivated on the road, the differential lock has no effect on vehicle response, unlike other permanently active locking systems.
